I’m not surprised that new music from Ms. Lauryn Hill is starting to surface before her return to the stage later this summer on the 2010 Rock The Bells Tour.

Guru… Respect!

After Guru’s somewhat untimely death a couple of weeks ago, and the (what I consider shady) dealings that followed, I didn’t want to post just anything, so I searched the net listening to mixtapes and tributes, these are a couple of things that I enjoyed.

Out of all the stuff i listened too, I thought it would be best to repost some pieces from cats that actually knew Guru, because I feel there might be some cats trying to get some undue publicity off of dudes death.

So,, 1st up I heres a recording of Jazzmatazz live at Eurockéennes Festival (France) (2001) posted by DJ Premier. For me Jazzmatazz is a good representation of the sound and feel of the 90′s.

As I said I listened to a lot of Guru mixtapes, but nobody had as much passion as DJ Evil Dee on his Podcast. He touches most of the hits and the songs that you probably want to hear, but lets face it there are so many Gang Starr and Guru records it would be too much to play everything.

Sade’s Making The Late Night Rounds

Sade is out promoting her new album. She stopped by a couple of the late night talk shows to preform Soldier of Love and Babyfather.

So NBC figured out how to get me to temporarily,, drop my personal boycott of Jay Leno (I’m with COCO). Sade preformed Babyfather with her daughter Ila as a backup singer.

It’s good to see that they haven’t abandoned making gritty records while providing the backing music for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

One thing though,,, is it just me or does it take a second to get used to Black Thought as a singer?

Sade’s Back After Ten Long Years

Sade’s album release schedual bugs me. I hate the amount of time inbetween Sade releases, so after ten years (not counting Lovers Live because as good as it was there was no new material.) I figured I would make Sade wait on me.

So on Febuary 09 2010,, I went to the store and purchased a copy of Soldier of Love,,, but I didn’t listen to it till the next day. Take that Ms.Sade! Maybe the next album will only take nine years to finish.

O.K.! I take it all back, the ten year hiatus didn’t feel that long, especiallysince this album seems to pickup where Lovers Rock left off. Once again this album pulls from a varitey ofdifferentstyles of music, including colors of Jazz, Hip-Hop, Electronica, Rock, Country, and Reggae.

Lyrically it feels likea personal conversation with Ms. Adu or listining to her introspective, and after watching the making of the album, I was supreised to hear that none of the music or lyrics were made before going to the studio. I think that adds to the organic feel andcohesivenessof the project.

Speaking of the studio.. The audio mix is outstanding! A song that seem simple like Morning Bird, on second listen has deep textures and sounds that reside in there own sonic space.

I hope that this album does two things. 1st I hope it ignites the mainstream seek out more music and artists that lyrically and musically have something to say. 2nd I hope this album bring Sade out on tour.

Finally, I’m looking forward to hearing some new Sade remixes and mashups.
