Most of the listining comunity picked sides, either you ran with he East Coast or the West Coast, until the South started making noise.

Up until about 1997 I continued to listen to everything but I started leaning more twoards the East Coast, and when the hood took over, I went straight Underground.

When Kanye West came on the scene, I felt like he was the bridge for underground and mainstream hip hop working with artists like Talib Kweli and Jay Z.

On the album Death of a Pop Star 9th Wonder becomes the musical bridge collaborating with David Banner.

This album has the potential to be a slept on classic. 9th’s beats have his signature bass line style and David Banner was free to tackle his own demons and lyrically explore subjects that would often be off limits on a normal Down South album.

The overall length o the album is pretty short, but I’d rather an album leave me wanting more than skipping over filler tracks.

He released a solo album called ‘The Fabulous Chi-Ali’, in my opinion it had some classic material on it (check Age Ain’t Nothing But a # after the jump), but after that Chi Ali faded into the background like so many of the Hip-Hop artist that were exploited during the days of the big record labels.

In 2000 everyone in the Hip Hop community was surprised to see Chi Ali featured on Americas Most Wanted in an extensive manhunt stemmed from second-degree murder charge. After evading the Police for a little over a year Chi Ali was arrested and convected of shooting his victim.

Chi Ali was sentenced to a fourteen years in a maximum security prison, and thats where John Walsh would love to end the story, but thanks to Harold Budd, Keith Lowe and Espi we get a view into the current world of Chi Ali.

Most great music is made as an effort to expand oneself, and this Hayling’s effort as a seasoned keyboard player to do more then sample the greats . He has deconstructed the music and recreated the colors of Ahmad Jamal, Herbie Hancock, and Thelonius Monk, then he looped and chopped the samples on his MPC and added a good dose of the BoomBap.

Actor turned director Mike Rapaport most famous (at least in my mind) as Remy in the 1995 flick Higher Learning, and his team followed the Tribe and caught some of the problems, and past issues that the group.

The Documentary is peppered with interviews and commentary from Hip Hop greats and there is an original score by Madlib.

A Tribe Called Quest is one of my favorite groups of all time. They changed the way people people listen to and make music. I always wondered why what seemed to be such a tight knit group had so many problems. Although I’ve seen and read a ton of interviews, I never feel like any of them ever got to any real issues.

Mike Rapaport is a long time Hip Hop fan and probably a friend of the group ,so I think he will be able to capture the real essence Tribe in a way we haven’t seen before.

Update

A couple of hours after I originally posted this Q-Tip denounced the new Tribe documentary on Twitter. It sounds like the group requested changes that were not made.

I’m still going to check the flick when it drops next year, but man, I would almost like a more in depth explanation of why Tribe doesn’t approve.

Sometimes controversy is the best promotion.

Overall Infamous Quotes is a decent mixtape, but you know if Skillz is involved the major focus is on lyrics. I’m sure I’ll be listening to this for some time pealing back the layers of dudes punch lines and metaphors.

This one is good candidate for the headphones.
